Turkey Day shootout: Brother/sister, Son/Father Teams survive Turkey Day
Mark , Sarah with Ruby enjoying prize giving and a soon to be turkey dinner.
A modern day wild west shootout occured out on the waters of Alamitos Bay this past weekend as ABYC hosted its annual Turkey Day Regatta. The A fleet was filled with rockstar sailors ready to fight it out for the converted ‘Moment of Glory Trophy’ and take home turkey and pies. Although the Lido fleet showed up to play, the wind barely showed up at all. The fleet saw winds between 3-5 at most all weekend long. But the sun was out and the fleet had a good time catching up with each other and floating around in our beloved lidos.
Although the results don’t show it, the racing was close in the A fleet with Mark/Sarah, Bruce/Dina, Brian/Drake, Bob/Saylor and Butch/Naz all leading a race at some point this past weekend. In fact, Brian was on fire on Sunday leading most of race two and three. Butch/Naz had the lead most of race four, too! The fleet saw multiple general recalls and even a tacking duel between the young guns of Brian/Drake and Mark/Sarah. When the dust had settled, Mark/Sarah were able to survive the shootout take home the turkey. In the B fleet, the son and dad team of Blake and Ed Behrens earned their turkey by winning six of seven races against the husband and wife team of Charles and Joanna Smith. Coming in third was local team of Mike Corzine/Jim Lincoln. Coming in 4th was Evan Ruiz. Evan is a product of the city’s Leeway Sailing program and the Turkey Day Regatta was her first regatta! Way to go Evan!
Plug the Turkey Day regatta in for next year if your haven’t already. It’s a fun weekend filled with close racing, catching up with your Lido family and even a good ole’ fashion turkey dinner on Saturday night at the club. Make a commitment to come out and play next year. You won’t regret it!

Class President, Butch Michel and crew Naz are quite ecstatic to be leading Mark & Sarah. A vantage point seen by few all weekend.
Editors comments: Mark & Sarah, sailing Orin B, were on fire and won with all bullets in a very tough fleet.
