Eugene Yacht Club has hosted many championship regattas and they put on a truly fun championship regatta for the Lido class this year. The format called for a 3 race qualifying series to break the thirty three boat fleet into Gold and Silver fleets, followed by two days of championship racing.

Friday's qualifying series was held in a 7 to 12 knot, shifty breeze. The four flights raced each other once. After the three races, Golison and Corsi were the top qualifiers with a 1,1, 4 score.
For Saturday’s start of the championship regatta, the breeze waited a long time before filling in. Competitors waited until 3:30 before the breeze filled in enough to race. The good news was that the class annual meeting was conducted during this delay to help pass the time. Three Gold fleet races were held followed by three Silver fleet races in 6 to 9 knots of shifty wind. With a short course format, rotating the two fleets ensured close racing and an uncluttered race course. At 6:00 and with a nice breeze still blowing, the PRO called the Gold fleet back out for two more races. With a later sunset and such a late start to the day’s racing, this was a good call.

After five Gold races, Golison and Corsi (Rossmoor, CA) had 12 points, followed by Kerry Poe (Portland, OR) with 24 points and Daniel Gilboa (Long Beach, CA) with 33 points. Rounding out the top five were Mark Sandifer (Portland) and Kevin Thomas (Long Beach).
After three Silver races, Steve Orsini (Anacortes, WA) led with 4 points followed by Denise Oiger (Newport Beach, CA) and Steve Schroeder (Eugene, OR) with 12 points each.

Unfortunately on Sunday, the breeze never filled in to race. Saturday's results were the final 2016 Nationals’ results.

Looking at the final Gold Fleet results, it appears that two of the class’s most active fleets may be starting a fun rivalry as Fleet 6 went 1st, 3rd and 5th while Portland sailors went 2nd and 4th.
