Lido Love abounds at the Fleet 1 Valentine's Day Regatta

Lido love was definitely in the air as nine lido teams flocked to Fleet One’s newest annual regatta: the Valentine’s Day Regatta. This year was especially special due to the fact that the regatta was actually held on Valentine's day! How lovely! Although the weather forecast called for warm temperatures, a flood tide, and light winds, the day turned out to be much better then predicted. Yes their was power boats out on the water, too, but with the news lately full of the rest of the nation more then knee deep in snow, we don’t have much to complain about here in So Cal. Besides, it’s always a great day out on the water in our beloved lido’s with our lido family.

Out on the race course, the A & B divisions were raced together making for a more crowed start line, mark roundings and finishes. The racing took place farther out in the channel too between Balboa and Newport Harbor YC, making for the occasional drive by of fancy yachts through the race course more common, but the fleet managed well. Winds were in the 3-5 know range, but always appearing to get lighter after the fleet rounded the windward mark to sail downwind. It definitely was a shirt off kind of day! What the results don’t show is that the racing was quite exciting with a couple of lead changes found throughout the races. In fact, Susan Lanour/Mark Williams were on fire in the first race, coming close to beating me & my ‘smoking hot lady friend’ to a first place finish! Race two saw most of the fleet converge at the leeward mark at the same time, reminding several teams about rule 18 the hard way. Race three saw Charles/Joana Smith, Kathy/Cindy and Walt/Andrea all rounding the Windward mark together & in front of me and the rest of the fleet! Race four found Walt and I pulling away from the fleet and having a match race of sorts for first and second place. When the dust had settled ‘smoking hot lady friend’ & I won the A’s followed by Walt in 2nd, Gabe Ferramola/Melody Wong in 3rd,Kathy/Cindy in 4th and Charles/Joan in 5th. In the B’s Susan/Mark led the way followed by Denise/Paul Ogier, Greg Boudreauz/Susan Mulcair and Travis/Jessica.

If you missed out on this years Valentine's Day Regatta, do yourself a favor and come out and play next year. Not only do you get to sail you lido with your significant other, but more importantly you get a nice T-shirt out of it & you get to spend some quality time with the one you love, your lido 14! Plus, the trophies are an assortment of chocolate, so you have the chance to make your ‘smoking hot lady friend’ all happy without blowing a lot of money at some expensive restaurant. It’s a win-win! Hosted by Balboa YC & organized by “wonderful” Walter Johnson, this is the third year of this regatta being run. My only regret is that this is my first time sailing in the regatta! This is yet another one of those one-day regatta’s worth sailing! Walter, lido fleet one and Balboa YC really put on a great time for us & it’s always fun to dust off the lido, get out of the house and spend some good times with your lido family. I’m already looking forward to next years Valentine’s Day Regatta!

Lido Love, baby!
